Kon Plong, Central Highlands, VietnaM

Area (ha): 10,000

Commodities: Coffee, Pulp & Paper

Annual carbon sequestration (tonnes CO2 equiv.): 70,000

In the central highlands of Vietnam, Flora & Fauna International is supporting the creation of a new national park to connect the last remaining habitats of critically-endangered species such as the grey-shanked douc langur monkey. The forest here is under threat from coffee, cassava, agri-business, new roads, wind farms, and resettlement.

However, not all of the habitat will be incorporated into the new park. Donations to the Forest Conservation Fund will support local private sector actors and communities to:

  • Move the remaining forest into conservation management

  • Create a volunteer network to monitor illegal wildlife trade

  • Train community rangers

Miombo Forests, Zambia

Area (ha): 500

Commodities: Coffee

Africa’s Miombo forests are the world’s largest dry woodlands, forming a broad belt across South-Central Africa, from Angola in the west to Tanzania to the east. The Miombo forests are home to many species, including several specialist endemic birds, the African elephant, African wild dog, sable antelope and hartebeests. A large portion of these forests grow in Zambia; which unfortunately faces the world’s second highest rate of deforestation at around 1.5% or 250,000 to 300,000 ha lost per annum. Wood extraction, land use changes and human-caused forest fires are the main drivers of deforestation.

On the south bank of Lake Tanganyika in Zambia’s Northern Province, Mt. Sunzu Coffee Estate has decided to set aside 500 ha of Miombo forest on their land. They are looking for both financial and technical support to protect and monitor this forest area, and to work with neighbours to protect further forest in the landscape.
